The Safest Course

Considering all the arguments that are presented in favour of and against blood flagellation, the safest course of action to take would be to refrain from the rituals. Consider the following four scenarios*:
1, If a person performs blood shedding and if the act is detrimental for all the reasons that have been given, then that person would be committing some serious sins.
2, If a person performs blood shedding and if the detriments are not real then the merit of performing the acts is very minimal since Ahlulbayt (a) would not refrain from a significantly meritorious act.
3, If a person refrains from the performance of blood shedding and if the act is detrimental for all the reasons that have been given, then that person would receive rewards for refraining from a harmful act that was not practiced by Ahlulbayt (a).
4, If a person refrains from the performance of blood shedding and if the detriments are not real then the merits lost due to non-performance is very minimal since Ahlulbayt (a) would not refrain from a significantly meritorious act.
The argument can be summarized using the following decision matrix:

Thank you for this excellent article. You should use the opportunity this Muharram to inform people of this. We shia need to do what our imams expect us to do at this time: mourn and educate ourselves to become better Muslims and better Shias. Why don’t we use Muharram to improve our Salah for example, didn’t imam Husssain AS stop during the battle and started congregational prayers while the arrows were hitting them left right and centre? Would those who do tatbir do the same. Some take Salah so lightly while tatbir so seriously.

^We are allowed to pray 3 times a day. A Narration from Wasa`il ush-Shi`a (one of our greatest sources) states: [ 27586 ] 7 ـ وبهذا الاسناد عن أبي عبدالله ( عليه السلام ) قال : إنا نأمر الصبيان أن يجمعوا بين الصلاتين : الاولى والعصر ، وبين المغرب والعشاء الآخرة ما داموا على وضوء قبل أن يشتغلوا .
ورواه الشيخ بإسناده عن محمد بن يعقوب .
7 – And by this isnad from Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام. He said: Verily we command the children to combine between the two salat: the first (i.e. zhuhr) and `asr, and between maghrib and the final `isha, so long as they are on wudu prior to them getting busy.
And the Shaykh narrated it by his isnad from Muhammad b. Ya`qub.
…As you can see, in the narration above the noble Imam Ja`far as-Sadiq (as) commands Shi`a children to combine salat.
Another narration implies that it is allowed based on timings (also from Wasa`il ush-Shi`a): [4857] 1 ـ محمّد بن علي بن الحسين بإسناده عن زرارة ، عن أبي جعفر ( عليه السلام ) قال : إذا زالت الشمس دخل الوقتان الظهر والعصر ، وإذا غابت الشمس دخل الوقتان المغرب وعشاء الآخرة .
1 – Muhammad b. `Ali b. al-Husayn by his isnad from Zurara from Abu Ja`far عليه السلام. He said: When the sun has declined the two times, zhuhr and `asr, have entered. And when the sun has set the two times, maghrib and the final `isha, have entered.
… It, however, is much better and mustahab to read the five salat separately at their respective times.
In regards to adding phrases to the adhan like “Aliyyun waliullah” or “Muhammad wa Ahli Muhammad khayru’ l-bariah”, the correct opinion is that it is bid`ah and should not be done. According to Shaykh as-Saduq, one of our greatest scholars, it was started by the heretic Mufawwida sect who thought the Imams (as) controlled the universe (audhobillah). Judging is not only Allah can judge, but u might as well be astaghfurilla of those guys who comes to Majid/hussainiat but also smoke, go clubbing, drink, never pray but in muharam do qamar zani. This is the case for many guys in the city I live in. Our purpose of life is to know the true meaning of Islam, read Quran, worship or lord Allah and that is why the the ahlubayt and imams sacrificed their life’s for.

it is tiring seeing western national newspapers ridiculing our religion which is the opposite result to what we want (promoting the Ahlulbait), especially in tines like this when there is strong hatred towards Islam via Islamophobia in the general public, hate crimes towards muslim women and gaining popularity of extreme/rascist right wing politics.

To the brother who posted the above message:
1 – Zanjeer and Qama Zani are as good as wajib? Strange that none of the Imams (as) subsequent to Imam Husayn (as) practiced this just as good as wajib act.
2 – Zanjeer Zani and Qama Zani have no effect but to degrade true Islam. We have 12 shining stars that our Sunni brothers and sisters do not. Actions such as zanjeer and qama zani serve only to portray Shias as insane, idiotic, mindless barbarians. Sunnis (and others) are stopped from investigating Shia Islam by these actions and do not become aware of the 12 Imams. Who would want to join a group where people commit mindless self-harm upon themselves?
3 – Sitting with an iPad during Muharram is infinitely preferable to acts of insanity.
4 – We were definitely NOT created to mourn Imam Husayn (as).
5 – How we weep and grieve is not up to us but is determined by Islam. These practices do not fall within Islam.
6 – Those who commit these acts claim to be Husaynis. Who spilled the blood of Imam Husayn (as) and his followers? The Yazeedis. You are in effect imitating the Yazeedis: spilling the blood of Husaynis. Bravo!

Get lost, you have to provide just ONE narration where ANY imam tells us to do this, or have done it themselves. If NOT, insha’Allah you enter Hellfire for willfully and stupidly making a mockery of the family of Muhammad(swa), the religion of Islam and the Muslims.

Mashallah brother. Couldn’t have put it better. This culturism of tatbir is the only thing that non shias use against us. This small group of people have tarnished the true shia.
